pass는 프랑스 고어 pas 의 'step(걸음),
track(사람들이 다닌 길)' 이라는 의미,
그리고 라틴어 passus 의 'step, pace (속도)'라는
뜻에서 유래했다고 합니다.
그 후 그 의미는 '어떤 장소를 지나기 위한
기록된 허가증'이라는 의미로 확대되어 사용되고,
오늘 날까지 '자유 이용권' 과 같은 의미로 사용되기도 합니다.

"mountain defile," c.1300, from O.Fr. pas "step, track," from L. passus "step, pace" (see pace (1)). The meaning "written permission to pass into, or through, a place" is first recorded 1591, from pass (v.). Sense of "ticket for a free ride or admission" is first found 1838.

그리고 compass 는 프랑스의 고어(옛말)
'빙 둘러서 가는, 측정하다, 균등하게 나누다' 라는 의미의
compasser, '공간, 장소' 라는 의미의 compass 에서
유래 되었다고 합니다.

그런데 라틴어의 com 은 'together(함께)' 라는 의미가 있고,
passus 는 pass의 유래와 같은 'step'이라는 의미가 있으므로,
pass 와 compass 가 연관이 있는 단어라고 말할 수 있네요.

나침반 나침반

• 나침반(羅針盤, compass)은 항공이나 항해 등에서 방향을 알기 위해 쓰는 기구이다. 나침판이라고도 한다.
