Where to begin.

There is nothing wrong with browsers handling 4K Videos. It's a matter of DRM (Digital Rights Management) and studio perception.

Disney is notorious about their DRM practices on Windows PC. They're not nearly as critical on Macs with Safari. Disney will not allow you watch things above 720p on a Windows PC, period. Doesn't matter if you're using Vudu, Hulu, Movies Anywhere, YouTube, Google Play or Prime Video. Doesn't matter if its a browser or an App 720p is the highest you can go.

For Hulu they even cap it to 480p on a browser, doesn't matter what plan you have. Your only way to get 720p is to use the official Hulu App which isn't really an app at all! It's just a Browser extension. The first time you install the it attaches to whatever is your default browser. If its Edge then you're in luck because it will attach to Edge (UWP version) and give you 720p. If your main browser is Chrome then you'll be stuck with 480p. They're being sued for this.

[If you go to Movies Anywhere.com they'll also cap you at 480p unless you use Edge (UWP Version) then you'll get 720p OR if you're on a mac with Safari then you'll get full 1080p. This is awful because it doesn't matter if the Movie is from Disney or not they'll still cap you at 720p/480p on Windows.] (https://help.moviesanywhere.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004972423-What-devices-are-supported-for-Movies-Anywhere-#:~:text=PC%2FWeb%3A%20Movies%20Anywhere%20is,requirements%3A%20OSX%2010%20and%20up)

For those wondering why I keep saying UWP version (Universal Window Platform) its because Microsoft has ditched their classic Edge browser and has switched over to using Chromium, but remnants of the UWP version still exists on updated PC and that's how Hulu attaches itself to Edge.

It's important to understand what UWP apps are as well. Basically Microsoft came up with a system to allow companies to make apps work easily across microsoft products meaning if a developer makes an app for Xbox One or Xbox Series X they can easily port it over to Windows 10. These are mostly self contained apps that you download from the Windows Store. Unfortunately many "Xbox" apps are not supported on Windows 10 by these companies and that's a problem we are facing with Disney Plus

UWP Apps that support 4K video playback

  • Netflix

  • Movies and TV

  • Vudu (Although its finicky and has lots of problems)

  • Edge

UWP Apps that Support HD video playback

  • Prime Video (1080p)

  • Hulu (720p if attached to Edge)

UWP Apps that Exist but are not available for Windows

  • HBO Max (and their family of apps..)

  • Fandango Now

  • Disney Plus (4K)

  • Tubi

  • Peacock

TLDR: Browsers are fine they can do 4k playback but they don't support the same DRM as UWP app. And Disney is the problem. Disney doesn't allow any of their media to be played at anything beyond 720p (Movies Anywhere, Hulu, Disney+) on a Windows PC

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

After getting tons of blooming and no peak brightness I realized that my content is not streaming in 4k HDR. I have searched all over and see nothing about this topic. Disney+ claims to automatically play at the best quality where Safari claims to support HDR. So what am I not doing correctly? Battery setting is not set to “optimize video streaming while on battery”.

I have been watching shows on my iPhone 13 Pro since I do not have a tv, and now that I finally was able to upgrade my computer I was hoping this would be a better viewing experience than my phone..

Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately, Disney+ doesn’t support (at least to my eyes) 4K or HDR on the website using any browser. One workaround I found is to watch the Disney+ show or movie on an iPhone or iPad, then AirPlay it to the Mac. This feature requires macOS 12 Monterey FYI. Hope this helps!
