샌프란시스코 자이언츠가 지안카를로 스탠튼 영입에 실패할 경우를 대비해 앤드류 맥커친 트레이드를 위해 피츠버그 파이어리츠와 접촉을 이어가고 있다는 기사가 나왔다. 스탠튼과 맥커친은 각각 포지션은 다르지만, 샌프란시스코는 외야 3개 포지션 모두 전력 보강이 필요한 상황 (그리고 홈런을 쳐줄 수 있는 타자라면 일거양득) 이기에, 어쩌면 당연한 아이디어라고 볼 수 있겠다.

이런 가운데, 알렉스 파블로비치 기자의 글을 재미있에 읽어 그 내용을 공유하고자 한다. 샌프란시스코와 앤드류 맥커친의 궁합이 맞을 이유, 맞지 않을 이유에 대해 각각 적은 칼럼이다.

궁합이 맞는 이유: 하락세를 경험한 2016년 이후, 맥커친의 2017 공격 지표는 반등에 성공했다. 출루율 .363, 28개의 홈런과 88타점, 그리고 OPS+ 121을 기록한 것이다. 그 어떤 측정 지표를 기준으로 하더라도, 그는 현재 샌프란시스코 로스터 전체를 통틀어 최고 타자가 될 수 있으며, (팀 중심 타자인) 포지에 도움이 될 것이며, 현재 팀이 간절히 필요로 하는 '우타 거포'의 공격력을 제공해줄 수 있다. 

Why He Fits: After a downturn in 2016, McCutchen’s offensive numbers rebounded in 2017. He posted a .363 on-base percentage, 28 homers, 88 RBI and an OPS+ of 121. By any metric, he would be the best hitting outfielder on the roster, and he could give Posey a sidekick and provide the offense with the right-handed pop that is so sorely needed.

서른 한살인 맥커친은 여전히 정상급 기량을 보여줄 수 있고, 2018 시즌이 끝나면 FA 자격을 얻는다 (동기부여가 되어 있다는 의미). 이것은 그가 자이언츠에 딱 맞는 선수라는 또다른 이유이다. 창의적인 셈법, 혹은 또다른 트레이드를 통해 자이언츠는 맥커친의 내년 연봉 1,475만 달러의 전부 혹은 상당 부분을 떠안으면서도 사치세 부과 상한선 미만 혹은 그 선을 정확히 지키는 팀 연봉을 유지할 수 있다. 또한 (어차피 내년까지 뛰고 FA이기 때문에) 향후 팀에 재정적인 부담이 되는 (장기계약자 같은) 선수가 아니다. 트레이드 루머가 끊이질 않았던 요 몇 년이었기에 그는 엄청나게 가치가 높은 유망주를 지불하지 않아도 될 수 있다.

At 31, McCutchen should still have plenty left, and he would be in a contract year. That’s another reason why this is a good fit. With some creative accounting and perhaps another trade, the Giants could absorb all or most of McCutchen’s $14.75 million and stay under or right at the tax, and he wouldn't add to their financial issues going forward. After a couple years of trade rumors, he doesn’t figure to be too expensive in terms of prospects, either.

그의 공격력과 계약 상황을 놓고 본다면, 맥커친  -클럽하우스에서도 친화력이 뛰어난 것으로 알려진-  은 포스트 시즌에 마지막으로 한 번 더 도전하는 '나이들어가는 팀(an aging team)'에 완벽한 궁합의 선수이다.

If you’re just talking about his offensive profile and his contract, McCutchen — also known as a good clubhouse guy — is the perfect fit for an aging team trying to take one last shot at the postseason. 

궁합이 맞지 않는 이유: 물론 수비는 중요하다. 하지만 그중에서도 자이언츠의 2017 시즌 상황을 감안하면 이 팀엔 특히 그렇다. 구단 측은 이미 외야 수비 개선을 최우선 과제로 밝힌 바 있는 가운데, 맥커친을 중견수로 세운다는 것은 지난 수개월간 수뇌부가 이야기했더너 모든 것에 '역행'하는 움직임이다.

Why He Doesn’t Fit: Of course, defense matters. It matters a lot to the Giants in particular after the way 2017 played out. They have made fixing the outfield defense a priority, and putting McCutchen in center field would fly in the face of everything management has talked about over the last several months. 

'팬그래프'에 따르면, 맥커친은 디펜시브 런 세이브드(Defensive Runs Saved, 수비 공헌도를 점수로 환산한 것)에서 -16 을 기록했는데, 이는 메이저리그 전체 중견수 가운데 '워스트 3'에 해당하는 성적이다 (참고로 '최악'은 당연히 자이언츠였다). 이런 부진이 올해 갑자기 생긴 것은 아니다. 맥커친의 수비 지표는 지난 몇 년에 걸쳐 굉장히 좋지 않았으며, 파이어리츠는 스탈링 마르테의 (약물 양성 반응으로 인한) 징계가 팀의 계획을 완전히 망쳐버리기 전까진 그를 아예 우익수로 포지션을 옮기기도 했다.

Per FanGraphs, McCutchen was worth negative 16 Defensive Runs Saved in 2017, making him one of the three worst defensive center fielders in the big leagues (the Giants already have the worst). This wasn’t a one-year fluke, either. McCutchen's defensive metrics have been brutal over the last couple of years and the Pirates actually moved him to right field before Starling Marte’s suspension wrecked their plans. 

자이언츠는 처음엔 이 중견수 문제를 엔젤 파간, 그 다음엔 디너드 스판과 함께 갔었다. 어떤 시점이 되면 선수는 코너 외야수로 보직을 옮겨야할 때가 오는데, 지금 스판이 그런 상황인 가운데 수비 지표 뿐 아니라 눈으로 봐도 하락세인 맥커친을  '스탑갭 (a stopgap)' 으로 염두에 둔다는 것은 설득력이 없는 결정이다.

The Giants went down this road with Angel Pagan and then again with Denard Span. At some point, a player needs to move to a corner, as Span now will, and they absolutely can’t look at McCutchen as a stopgap in center field, not with the story told by his defensive numbers and the eye test. 

만일 맥커친을 좌익수나 우익수로 보고 진행하는 트레이드라면, 그는 팀에 좋은 영입이 될 것이다. 하지만 자이언츠는 이미 스판과 헌터 펜스 둘에게 약 3천만 달러에 가까운 돈을 지불해야 하기에, 이 둘과 맥커친, 그리고 새롭게 영입해야할 '수비 좋은 중견수' (의 연봉) 까지 감수할 것이라곤 생각하기 어렵다. 메워야할 구멍이 너무도 많은 팀에겐 (이런 식의 '한 쪽 문제에 너무 많은 돈을 들이는 것은') 현명한 자원의 재분배가 아니다.

If McCutchen is being looked at for left field or right, he’s a nice fit. But the Giants already owe Span and Hunter Pence about $30 million, so it’s hard to see a path forward that includes those two, McCutchen, and a new defensive-minded center fielder. That’s not a reasonable allocation of resources for a team with so many holes to fill. 

내 생각엔, 왠지 맥커친의 영입은 없을 것 같다. 왜냐하면 샌프란시스코는 지안카를로 스탠튼을 데려올거니까!

PROSPECTS

피츠버그, 앤드류 맥커친 트레이드로 얼마나 잘 받아왔나

가끔 다른 팀 선수를 볼 때마다 '언제가 될진 모르겠는데, 샌프란시스코 자이언츠에 와서 뛰게 될 것 같다' 는 느낌을 받는 경우가 있다. 그리고 오늘, 몇 년 전엔가 막연했던 그 느낌이 현실이 됐다. 앤드류 맥커친이 자이언츠로 트레이드 된 것이다. 이를 맞이해 '현재 시점'에서 이 트레이드에 엮인 선수들은 각각 어떤 상황인지, 베이스볼 아메리카(Baseball America) J.J. 쿠퍼 칼럼에 잘 정리가 되어 있어 그 내용을 그대로 옮겨 붙인다.

자이언츠 영입

Giants Acquire:

앤드류 맥커친 (외야수)

Andrew McCutchen, OF

나이: 31세

Age: 31

맥커친 트레이드는 피츠버그의 '한 시대'가 끝났음을 뜻한다. 그는 지난 1993년, FA 자격을 얻어 마찬가지로 자이언츠 유니폼을 입었던 배리 본즈 이후 가장 성공적인 '스타 파이어리츠' 선수였기 때문이다. 2013 시즌 MVP 맥커친은 2011년부터 2015년까지 5년 연속 올스타에 선정됐었다. 2016년엔 타격에서 부진을 겪었지만, 지난 시즌 반등에 성공했다. 수비 측면에서 이 31세 외야수를 놓고 보면, 예전처럼 중견수를 볼 수 있는 자원은 아니고 실제 파이어리츠 구단 역시 그를 코너 외야수로 옮길 계획을 세웠지만, 스탈링 마르테가 (약물 양성반응으로) 징계를 받으면서 '풀타임 중견수'로 시즌을 치른 바 있다. 

The trade of McCutchen truly ends an era in Pittsburgh. He is the most successful Pirates star since Barry Bonds, who coincidentally left in free agency to join the Giants in 1993. McCutchen, the 2013 MVP, made five straight all-star appearances from 2011-2015. He struggled offensively in 2016 but bounced back in 2017. Defensively, the now 31-year-old outfielder is not what he once was in center field, and the Pirates initially planned to slide him to a corner, but when Starling Marte was suspended, he ended up staying in center field full-time.

올해가 계약 마지막 해인 가운데, 자이언츠는 맥커친과의 장기적인 관계(long-term commiment)를 생각친 않고 있다. 광활한 AT&T 파크 외야는 수비 범위가 넓은 외야수를 필요로 하기 때문이다. 좌익수일지 중견수일지 보직이 명확하진 않은 가운데, 맥커친의 포지션은 남은 오프 시즌에 구단이 어떤 추가 움직임을 보이느냐에 따라 달라질 것이다.

With only one year left on  his deal, the Giants have no long-term commitment in McCutchen. The spacious outfield of AT&T Park requires outfielders who can cover ground. With no obvious answer in left field or center, McCutchen's ultimate spot could depend on what else the Giants do this offseason.

파이어리츠 영입

Pirates Acquire:

브라이언 레이놀즈 (외야수)

Bryan Reynolds, OF

나이: 22세

Age: 22

2016년 자이언츠의 2라운드 지명자였던 브라이언 레이놀즈는 본지 선정 올해 SF 구단 TOP 10 유망주 랭킹에서 5위에 올랐던 선수로, 어느 레벨에서 뛰던 3할의 타율을 기록한 타자이다. 하지만 그보다는 장타력을 갖춘 선수가 될 것으로 봤던 스카우트들은, 그가 타율은 높되 삼진은 많고 펀치력은 없는 모습에 실망스러웠던 것 같다. 스위치 히터인 그는 통산 .312 타율 (대학 시절엔 .329) 을 기록하고 있다. 스탈링 마르테를 보유하고 있는 가운데 (그리고 오스틴 메도우스가 올라오고 있는), 레이놀즈는 장차 코너 외야수가 될 것 같다. 이따금씩 중견수를 볼 수 있지만, 우익수로서는 평균 이상의 수비수가 될 수 있다. 레이놀즈가 빅리거가 되는 것은 매우 가능성이 높아 보이지만, 그가 얼마나 큰 '임팩트'를 가진 선수가 될 것인지에 대해선 여러 말이 있을 수 있다. 만일 레이놀즈가 파워를 더욱 장착한다면 컨텐더 팀의 주전 선수가 될 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 지금같은 타격 어프로치라면, 2위권 팀의 주전 혹은 아주 출중한 '파트 타임 외야수' 쪽이 더 가까워 보인다.

The Giants second-round pick in 2016, Bryan Reynolds, the No. 5 prospect in our 2018 Giants Top 10 Prospects rankings, has hit for average wherever he's played. But scouts who have longed wanted to see Reynolds hit for more power seem disappointed that he's proving to be a high-average hitter with plenty of strikeouts and not much thump. The switch-hitter is a career .312 hitter (and hit .329 during his Vanderbilt career). With Starling Marte on hand (and Austin Meadows on the way), it's likely Reynolds will end up in a corner outfield spot. He can play center field in a pinch, but he's a potential above-average defender in the corners. Reynolds is very likely to be a big leaguer, but there is plenty of debate about how much impact he will have. If Reynolds adds more power, he could be a first-division regular, but his current approach makes him more of a second-division regular or an excellent part-time outfielder.

카일 크릭 (우완 투수)

Kyle Crick, RHP

나이: 25세

Age: 25

크릭은 또 한 명의 '공은 빠르지만 제구가 안되어서 메이저리그에서 성공하지 못한 선수' 가 될 운명인 것처럼 보였다. 지난 2015년, 그는 1이닝당 평균 한 명 이상을 볼넷으로 내보냈고, 2016년 더블A로 돌아가서는 평균 자책점 5.04 (그리고 xFIP도 그와 비슷한 4.85) 에 그쳤다. 하지만 자이언츠는 다시 한 번 크릭의 보직을 불펜으로 옮기는 시도를 했고, 첫 번째 보다는 훨씬 나은 결과를 냈다. 크릭의 제구력이 '최하위'에서 '평균 이하'로 개선된 것이다. 그 덕분에 2017년, 처음으로 메이저리그에 콜업됐고, 30차례의 등판에서 효율적인 투구 내용을 보였다. 크릭의 95-98마일 패스트볼은 볼 카운트가 불리한 상황 (타자가 패스트볼을 예상할 수 있는 카운트) 에서도 헛스윙을 이끌어낼 수 있다. 슬라이더를 유인구로 던지는데, 그럭저럭 쓸만한 편이다. 원래 선발 투수였던터라 여전히 체인지업을 구사할 수 있는데, 좌타자를 상대로 이 구종을 활용할 것이다. 구위를 놓고 보면 필승조 불펜투수로 쓸 수 있을 정도지만, 제구 난조가 있다는 점에서 현재로선 추격조 불펜진으로 활용하는 것이 더 적합하다. 선발 투수로 뛰었던 이력은, 필요시 2이닝 이상을 소화할 수 있도록 해줄 것이다. 크릭은 곧 발매될 '2018년 베이스볼 아메리카 프로스펙트 핸드북' 에서 자이언츠 TOP 30 유망주 중 18위에 이름을 올렸었다.

Crick seemed destined to become yet another of the long list of flame-throwers whose wildness kept them from big league success. He walked more than a batter an inning in 2015, then posted a 5.04 ERA (and a similar 4.85 xFIP) in a return to Double-A Richmond in 2016. But the Giants second try at moving Crick to the bullpen worked much better than his first attempt. Crick's control has improved from bottom-of-the-scale to below-average. That helped him get to the big leagues for the first time in 2017 and he was effective in 30 appearances. Crick's 95-98 mph fastball can blow past hitters even when he falls behind in the count. His slider is a chase pitch, but has some effectiveness as well. The former starter still has a changeup he will spot against lefties. Crick's stuff is that of a high-leverage reliever, but his control problems make him better suited to throw lower-leverage innings for now. His starter background makes him capable of handling multiple innings if needed. Crick ranked 18th on the Giants Top 30 Prospects rankings in the soon-to-be-released 2018 Baseball America Prospect Handbook.

이외에도 파이어리츠는 이번 트레이드를 통해 국제 유망주 보너스 풀에서 50만 달러를 받게 됐다. 피츠버그 구단은 현재 국제 유망주 계약 기간으로 유효한 4개월 반 기간 동안 해당 금액만큼을 더 사용할 수 있게 됐다.

The Pirates also received $500,000 in international bonus space in the deal. They can spend that allotment over the next four and a half months of the current international signing period.
